Texas Sex Offender Registry - Who Must Register?

Depending on the type of offense, individuals convicted of a sex crime can face some of the harshest, most life-altering penalties our criminal justice system has to offer. Aside from fines and possibly lengthy terms of imprisonment, penalties associated with a sex crime conviction can also entail long-term repercussions – specifically in the form of mandatory sex offender registration.

Since Texas sex offender registration laws first took effect in 1991, they have been amended and adjusted in every legislative session. In many of these amendments, policies were tightened to ensure that anyone convicted of certain sex offenses were closely monitored and restricted. An individual may be required to register as a sex offender in Texas if they meet any of the following criteria:

  • Have a reportable conviction or adjudication;
  • Are required to register as a condition of release or parole to mandatory supervision;
  • Are required to register as a condition of community supervision; or
  • Are an extra-jurisdictional registrant

In most cases, information about convicted sex offenders is available to the public. Depending on the situation, terms of registration may remain in place for a lifetime. Given the fact that sex offender registration can tarnish one's reputation and negatively impact their future, taking swift steps to find the right defense is crucial.
